About This Site
About This Site
Hello, and thank you for visiting.
My name is Koh, a Japanese writer based near Tokyo.
I created this site to introduce Tokyo and Japan from a local perspective through English writing.
Tokyo is one of the most famous cities in the world, yet many parts of its culture and atmosphere are surprisingly difficult to explain through ordinary travel guides alone. Behind the famous landmarks, there are layers of history, changing cityscapes, local habits, seasonal traditions, and small everyday details that shape the character of the city.
This website explores those aspects of Tokyo and Japan.
Rather than focusing only on popular tourist attractions or rankings, I am interested in the feeling of places — old neighborhoods beside modern skyscrapers, quiet shrines hidden behind busy streets, aging shopping districts, local festivals, cafés, bookstores, architecture, and the subtle atmosphere that people living here often take for granted.
Most articles are based on places I have personally visited, photographed, researched, or experienced in daily life.
English is not my first language, but I write in English because I want to share a Japanese perspective directly with readers from around the world. I believe local viewpoints can sometimes reveal parts of Japan that are overlooked in standard guidebooks or mass-produced travel content.
What You’ll Find on This Site
This site mainly covers:
- Tokyo neighborhoods and city walks
- Japanese history and cultural background
- Shrines, temples, and seasonal festivals
- Architecture and urban landscapes
- Everyday customs and local observations
- Travel essays and reflections
- Occasionally, books and cultural topics related to Japan and Europe
Some articles focus on famous locations, while others explore places that are less well known but still meaningful in understanding Tokyo’s character.
Why I Created This Website
Many modern travel websites prioritize speed, rankings, or short summaries designed mainly for search engines and social media.
I wanted to create something a little different.
This site aims to look at Tokyo more slowly and carefully — not only as a tourist destination, but also as a living city shaped by history, memory, contradictions, and everyday life.
Tokyo can sometimes feel beautiful, overwhelming, artificial, nostalgic, chaotic, or unexpectedly quiet, often all at once. Those complexities are part of what makes the city interesting to write about.
